Saratoga Racetrack

🇨🇴 Ayer no hicimos mucho, pero lo que hicimos fue nuevo para nosotros.

Salimos temprano para el Saratoga Racetrack. Es un estadio ecuestre en Saratoga Springs, NY. Ayer era un día de carreras y pasamos el almuerzo y la primera parte de la tarde viendo los caballos, las carreras, y la gente apostando cientos de miles de dólares cada carrera. Creo que en general nos interesaría más ir a la Indy 500 pero de todas formas la pasamos bien.

De ahí salimos hacia Syracuse, NY, y por el camino tuvimos nuestro encuentro rutinario con otra tormenta descomunal, finalmente llegando a Cortland.

En el hotel fuimos a la piscina y estrenamos el inflable que hasta el momento solamente había servido para ocupar espacio en el carro. Definitivamente es mejor ponerlo en uso porque, aparte de cubrir media piscina, despierta en los niños ganas de nadar sin peleas ni intervención de los papás.

🇺🇸 Yesterday we didn’t do much, but what we did do was new to us.

We left early for the Saratoga Racetrack. It’s an equestrian stadium in Saratoga Springs, NY. Yesterday was race day and we spent lunch and the early portion of the afternoon seeing the horses, watching the races, and watching the people betting hundreds of thousands of dollars each race. I think we’d rather attend the Indy 500 but we still had a good time.

From there we started towards Syracuse, NY, and on the way we had our routine encounter with another gargantuan storm, finally arriving at Cortland.

At the hotel we went to the pool and unboxed the inflatable pool toy that until then had done nothing but occupy cargo space. We should have put it to use earlier because, aside from covering half the pool, it triggers something in the kids that makes them want to swim without getting into trouble or needing much adult intervention.

NYC I

🇨🇴 No se me ocurre una mejor forma de llegar a Nueva York que en tren directamente a Grand Central Station. Con la ayuda de Rubén nos levantamos temprano y cogimos un tren en New Haven directo a Manhattan. Como no dormimos mucho la noche anterior dormimos todo el recorrido.

En Manhattan dejamos nuestro equipaje en el hotel y comenzamos la caminata. Primero fuimos a Central Park y vimos una pequeña parte del parque hacia el zoológico. El almuerzo fue perros calientes de carrito en el parque.

Desde el parque caminamos hacia el sur por 5th Avenue entrando a varios locales e iglesias a lo largo del recorrido para escaparnos del calor y para apreciar un poco la arquitectura. Tomó mucho esfuerzo por parte de los niños pero valientemente llegaron a nuestro objetivo.

Cuando llegamos al pie del Empire State Building el sol estaba diréctamente sobre la torre, entonces no pudimos apreciar la altura sino hasta que subimos a la punta. Ahí nos tomamos nuestro tiempo mirando hacia todos lados para ver en qué consiste la ciudad desde arriba. Ha cambiado mucho en los últimos 25 años. Ahora los rascacielos están creciendo hacia el norte del Empire State Building y son angostos.

No obstante la valentía de los niños, a las 3:30 PM no teníamos más energía caminamos lo poco que pudimos al hotel para una siesta.

Dos horas después fuimos a comer cerca de Times Square donde los niños vieron la cuadra más iluminada de sus vidas y visitamos la tienda de M&M’s como recompensa por un día de largas caminatas al sol sin quejarse. Ningún paseo en familia es fácil, pero tenemos a los tres niños mejor dispuestos para ello y nos sentimos bendecidos.

🇺🇸 I can’t think of a better way to arrive to New York city than by train directly into Grand Central Station. With Rubén's help we rose early and took a train in New Haven straight for Manhattan. Since we didn’t get much sleep the previous night we slept the entire way.

In Manhattan we left our luggage at the hotel and started the walk. First we went to Central park and saw a small portion of it near the zoo. Lunch was hot dogs straight from a street cart right on the park.

From there we walked south on 5th Avenue hitting several stores and churches along the way to escape the heat and to take in the architecture. It took the kids a lot of effort but they bravely made it to our destination.

When we got to the base of the Empire State Building the sun was directly above the tower so we weren’t able to fully appreciate its height until after we had made it to the top. There we took our time looking in all directions to find out what the city is like from above. It has changed a lot over the past 25 years. Now the sky scrapers are growing north of the Empire State Building and they are narrow.

In spite of the kids’ bravery at 3:30 PM we were exhausted and spent what little energy we had walking to the hotel for a nap.

Two hours later we got dinner by Times Square where the kids saw the most brightly lit block of their lives, and we visited the M&M’s store as a reward for a day of long walks in the sun without whining. No family trip is easy, but we have the three best behaved kids for it and we feel blessed.
